Bar Keeper's Friend (usually found in the same aisle as Comet cleaner) has an ingredient in it called oxalic acid which works great for getting rust off of metal. Use it with a non-abrasive Scotchbrite green scrub pad.

Vinegar can remove rust too, but I've found it's best for surface rust. Barkeepers Friend also works well.
Rustoleum makes Rust Dissolver.
