Yes, we scrub with cleanser every 10 days or so. Can it be stopped at all?

I use Clorox Tabs in the tank. Keeps it clean & smells nice. Use at least every 2 weeks.

You can use toilet tabs to keep it clean, or drop a denture cleaning tablet in the toilet every few days. If it is a toilet that does not get used much, make sure to flush it every couple of days to keep the water from sitting so long.

The answer is: pumice. I have the same problem. I buy a pumice stick in the toilet bowl cleaner section of walmart. Very cheap, very safe, and it works. It's called "Pumie Scouring Stick". You can wear rubber gloves if you wish but you don't even need to get your hands wet to use it. Then flush away the gray grit.
