Stinky book

by Mandy Smith
I bought a nice book at a church sale but when I open it to look at it, it stinks so bad that I have to close it up. It just has a very strong, almost acid smell. Any suggestions?

lay the book in a pan of baking soda and leave in until the order dissipates. It may take a few tries.

The only thing I've found that works is putting the stinky object in an enclosed space with an ozone machine. The odors will be gone and will not recur.

I have had luck with putting a book in a rectangular baking pan filled with kitty litter. Put the top on the pan (or cover tightly with tin foil) and check it every day. It might take a couple days but I've had success with this method.

Put news paper between pages and then wrap it all in newspaper. Let it sit for a week and check to see if smell is gone. Sometimes it takes several changes of newspaper.
  • i have tried two different methods, one i sprinkled the pages with baking soda, placed in a bag waited, the second time i sprinkled the pages with baking soda, placed it in a couple of bags and placed in in the freezer for a week or too, both methods worked for me good luck

Put the book in a paper bag with baking soda. Close the bag and shake it gently. Leave for a few days. Remove book and if weather permits, lay it in the sun. Ruffle the pages periodically. After all of this when you think to do it, ruffle those pages again. Air and sun work wonders.

I have never tried it with a book but charcoal neutralizes odors. Try putting it in a closed container with several charcoal briquettes and leave it. I don't know how long it might take. You might want to lay a piece of tissue paper over the book to protect it from the charcoal.

Great idea Linda T. Thanks for posting it. I wonder if kitty litter would take the smell out of a musty suitcase. I will give it a try.
