Sounds like you have a residue on the floor which will need to come off first. Try using white vinegar mixed with water 50/50.If that does not work there is a product called Rejuvenate for wood floors available at Home Depot.

I've also used a product on my dark wooden kitchen floor called Quick Shine by Holloway House. They have a cleaner and a shiner.
Just remember the residue needs to be removed first.Regardless of recommendations.
