what is on the wall now?
If its painted with a good semi-gloss paint, you should be able to get it off if you don't let it build up too long. If its flat paint, give it a top coat with a poly that doesn't yellow. I use Dollar Tree Awesome Degreaser on all my clients and my own home.
You could add a backplash to the area with tile, ceiling tin, vinyl adhesive backsplashes.
How about tin tiles? Or repaint the wall with a good washable paint. Or go industrial and install sheet metal.
i went and found me a flat piece of sheet metal. Caulked it in place over the 50 + holes in the wall. Boreder it with gorilla tape to cover the edges,.
My favorite answer is a roll product called Walltex. I have used it for many years with enduring success for both appearance and cleaning. It's applied like wallpaper and can be removed when you want to change the decor. It scrubs like a dream. I have used it around all the counters as well as the stove. It's nearly waterproof... nearly! You can find Walltex at any paint/wallpaper store. It's a bit upscale, but the durability makes up for it.
if you have a dollar tree near by they have a removable paper (not contact paper, but you can use that too). Some of the designes look like tile. You can also use peel & stick flooring, especially the type that looks like wood.
A large piece of stainless steel or a large piece of pretty laminate available at home depo
