For a natural cleaner, try white vinegar and baking soda and elbow grease.
I use Woolite carpet cleaner for pets with Oxy clean. It works great on grout as well and has a handy scrubby brush on it.
I've used Simple Green to clean smoke and soot from fireplace bricks. Simple Green is environmentally safe, which I like. They have a new foaming cleaner that might make the job even easier.
