  • Get rid of everything you do not absolutely use or do not wish to have around. I suggest selling or donating rather than throwing in the trash.

clean as the mess appears...have a "home" for every item, and return it to home base when done. if you haven't used, touched or moved an item in 6 mo. and i'ts not a seasonal item- do you really need it?

have a home base for frequently used items and dock them at night. go by the 1 in 1 out rule. if you buy a shirt-remove a shirt, donate or use as a rag.

go thru your clothes keep only what fits well, and looks good on you. i live in a land of 4 distinct seasons, so i have a shelf for each -winter spring summer fall.

if you are able to afford an e reader, it can clear a lot of clutter of hard and paperback books. some e readers can get you the local paper. there are sites that will let you read a book from the web site.

research what items you need to keep for insurance purposes, what types of correspondence do you need to hang on to? birth certificates, wills? 3 year old bills?

pretend you are moving across country.....what items would you pay to have moved with you? what would you leave behind? the leave behind-take to a charity shop.

Be a minimalist. The less you have, the less there is to maintain.
