Electric sander and heavy grit sand paper. If you don't have one, you may be able to rent from your local Home Depot. Good luck.
Scraping and a wire brush in a drill. Wear hand and eye protection. You can use a grinder.
Apply muriatic acid directly to the back of a piece of tile if the mortar is particularly thick, such as more than 1/8 inch. Use a paint brush and coat the mortar with pure acid. As it loosens the concrete, use your scrub brush with water to gently scrub andremove the excess. Apply more as needed.
