What to do with plastic coated metal shelving that has gotten sticky

I have several pieces of the plastic coated metal shelving that have become sticky, not sure from what, maybe humidity and dust? I've washed the shelving but can't get rid of the sticky. Any thoughts?

try using a mr clean magic eraser.
WD40 would take it off.
If you can remove it from where it is installed, perhaps you can spray paint it outdoors. It would seal in the stickiness but repeated scraping may remove the paint. Or try spray on Kilz or shellac. I once sealed in smoke residue on wood paneled walls using paint on shellac.
Use washing soda or Borax, and Dawn in warm to hot water. Soak in the tub, and wipe them down.
Try ammonia.
