Our family has a cottage in Northern British Columbia, Canada and we spend most of our summers there. This year, we were hit with a very hot and dry season, which brought along with it, some wildfires in the area. During our last trip of the season, Labour Day weekend, we were on evacuation order and had to leave the day after we arrived. It was a very scary, panic stricken time. As we were packing, I noticed lots of wild rose hips growing everywhere In our backyard. I frantically picked as many as I could and tossed them into a basket to bring home. This brings me to my homemade, handpicked Rose hip Oil project! Here is a quick photo of what it looked like while we were leaving!!
I began this project by filling a basket with these lovely dark red/orange colored Rose hips. Our property is about 3500 feet above sea level so the wild rose growing season is done fast.

When I arrived home I rinsed and picked the tips off the rose hips. Next I set them in my window to really ripen and become a nice dark red color. Once they are ripe, they are also kind of soft and squishy.
I placed them in a bowl, and used a fork to mash them. A preferred method is to use a mortar and pestle.
Place them in a pot and add your carrier oil just to cover the rose hips. I used Extra Virgin Olive Oil, but there are many options. Simmer on low for 1/2 hour- 1 hour, and stir continuously. Be careful not to burn them. You will notice a very woodsy fragrance, which I LOVE the smell of.
I covered a mason jar with a brand new pair of pantyhose, and then slowly strained the oil into it. This will keep out any bugs or dirt or pieces left behind in the bowl.
I added 3 capsules of vitamin A to my final product. This keeps the oil preserved for a longer period of time. I then store my oil in a jar like this which you can find at Walmart.
My Infused Rose Hip Oil is ready to sell! Feel free to check out my store, or make your own! 😊

This will have to be the best story! I'm glad you got out okay and that you were able to save the rose hips. Best wishes 😇

I just made an infused oil with rose petals.I'm in N.S and am waiting for the rosehips to ripen.Actually before infusing oil with petals, rosehips, herbs etc. They should be dried well so you don't introduce water into the mix. This way the oil won't go rancid.I also use vitamin E..just a different way
