Somehow water keeps leaking from underneath my kitchen sink. I don’t check it every day so when I finally do it’s wet and blackish. What can I do to clean it? Please help me!

Sylvia: Black mold is EXTREMELY dangerous! https://www.webmd.com/lung-cancer/lung-cancer-and-mold#1

You must find the source of the leak and address that! ...you may have to hire a plumber --- but it would be money well spent.

Then, of course, address the mold --- it may take getting a new floor --- but since it's under the sink... a very inexpensive one (or scrap) will do

vinegar kills mold; hydrogen peroxide or bleach removes the stains the mold leaves...that being said if you do not fix the source of the moisture it doesn't matter how much you clean it up it will return rotting out all your studs, cabinets & counter tops down into flooring and basement if you have one or lower level housing areas(if you are in condo/townhouse/apt.). Check the faucets, disposal, dishwasher drain hose, faucets, drains, sprayer& hose and for sure around the sink edges(probably easiest to fix by recaulking it) for water, wet spots. leave the cupboard doors open for air circulation will help too.mold loves dark & wet,no air movement.

You need to solve the leak or it will come back.

  • Hi Sylvia - There are several ways to get rid of mold, but most importantly, you need to address the root cause to keep it from returning. This article focuses on the bathroom, but is an overall great article that covers methods of how to remove mold, if bleach is safe to use, and how to prevent it from coming back. Hope this helps!
