How to remove adhesives?

Under the backer board on the kitchen floor there is what appears to be a black adhesive we are going to be putting down porcelain tile but are having a problem getting up the adhesive, any ideas?

Nail polish remover
Just scrape it smooth. The backer will take care of the rest
I use rubbing alcohol strait out of the bottle on a paper towel. Rub until all adhesive is removed and surface is smooth again. Good luck.
