Depends on what you are painting them with. I used chalk paint on mine and all I did was wash them down with kitchen cleaner. If you are using some other kind of paint I recommend washing them and then applying a GOOD primer. I prefer Bullseye 1-2-3. It's my favorite because it requires no sanding. After the primer dries (I let it sit for 24 hours although they say 2 hours) then paint with your favorite paint. Good luck.

I'm sorry, I was not very clear. I don't mean "chalk paint" like to make a chalk board you can write on. I was referring to "chalky paint". Available in many colors just about everywhere. It's a little expensive but goes a lot further than regular paint. Be sure to seal it (especially in the kitchen or bathroom) with polycrylic. Not only will that protect the paint but will make it so you can scrub your cabinets. Again, sorry for the mix up.

Wash down with TSP. If you wash your cabinets down a lot chalk paint will not hold up, use all oil based products . If you don't, chalk paint would be fine. But don't finish with wax use polyeurethane.

  • You will need a really good degreaser. Because any left over will cause the paint to lift.

To clean wood cabinets with Murphy's oil soap, you can follow these steps:

    1. Dilute the Murphy's oil soap with water according to the instructions on the bottle.
    2. Dip a soft cloth or sponge into the solution and wring out the excess liquid.
    3. Gently wipe the wood cabinets with the damp cloth, making sure not to oversaturate the wood.
    4. Wipe the cabinets again with a clean, damp cloth to remove any soap residue.
    5. Dry the cabinets thoroughly with a clean, dry cloth.
