Advice for cleaning & Restaining wood?

I have one step at my back door that looks gross. It is hard wood but I do not know what kind of wood. I would love to clean it up and restain for a clean look. Please advise on the process. Thank you in advance!

    Sand it down thoroughly then you can restain. If you have access to a power washer you can cut your sanding time WAY down but you can just sand all the old dirt and grime away.

      Lol yeah... well a little paint stripper might go a long way too in helping get the gunk off, may save you a little sanding time ;)
