How do you keep outdoor patio furniture cushions clean?

I see lovely outdoor furniture with cushions in ads and magazines and I have yet to understand how people keep those nice looking. We have rain, trees, outdoor pets, the sun, wonderful things that make the cushions look unsightly. Any tips?

store them in a deck box when not in use. for added protection spray them down with scotch guard.

Start by dusting off surface dirt, then use a sponge or soft bristle brush to apply a solution of ¼ cup mild detergent (like Dawn or Woolite) diluted in 1 gallon of water. Rinse thoroughly to remove all the soap and allow the fabric to air dry, and your cushions should be as bright and cheery as the day you bought them.

If your cushion covers are canvas, you can likely remove them and toss them in the washer.

with a lot of work! If you mean the covers that are bit like shadecloth - I would never get them again. Pool water on them is worse, even when you hose the salt/chlorine water off - it turns them brown. Have cleaned mine several times with bleach & a scrubbing brush, hung them over the pool fence to hose off & dry. We like to use ours all year round, so packing them away is useless & ours seem to get a bit of mould on them through the winter, so every spring I have to clean them!

  • Yes, the ones in adverts and magazines do look stunning . . . But that is staged and has nothing to do with reality. I just wash mine a bunch of times throughout the season with a bit of Dawn dishsoap and rinse with the hose. Tiny house, tiny yard, no room for a deck box and since I am in So. CA they are in use all year long. Fading from the summer sun is just as bad. Never feel that your yard or house has to be perfect, as long as they are clean, that is all that matters - your guests are coming to see you and your family, not your stuff.

I bring them in when they are not being used. This is really the only way to keep them fresh looking and make them last.
