How to keep small pond clean.

I have a small pond( think the tractor tire pond) that is mostly in the shade. I have a small solar fountain that aerates the water somewhat. What can I use to keep the water clean. Not bleach because the small fountain sprays the surrounding plants and kills them if the water contains bleach.

I have had a small pond that I kept some gold fish in and to keep it clean, I periodically just flooded it until it was clear. The Fish keep out the mosquitoes, how often depended on how hot it was and how often my Doxxy decided to go swimming in it. We had a pool for him, but he preferred my pond!

Most ponds suffer from too little aeration. You may want to consider a wired pump to move more water and not just when the sun shines.
