My question as I watched these grandparents was always, "Why are you sweeping your yards, and why is there no grass around your house?" We have grass around ours.

There are a couple of things you can try. Hang something shiny above your area. The movement of the shiny objects will deter the birds. You could also hang a predator type of bird like a hawk. Another idea would be to hang something that makes noise, like a bell or a wind chime. Birds don't like shiny, noisy things so they should fly in a different direction. The only issue is that the birds will "get used to" whatever you hang so you need to move them occasionally. I hope those ideas help. Wishing you the best.
Use spike kits. They're hard plastic strips with spikes. Birds don't like landing on them, but it won't kill them if they accidentally touch them.
