Need ideas to eliminate dirt/mud along fence line.

My two dogs keep the perimeter of the yard beaten down because of running along fence after squirels. After days of rain, it’s a major problem!

  • My vote is to lay a couple layers of landscape fabric then top with gravel, river rock or decorative rock of your choice.

Pave a path for them? Maybe with concrete pavers from Home Depot?

I would go with pavers of some type. If the dogs run the fence line frequently, they may cause gravel or rock to fly all over the place in the yard when they are running. You could put down cement and lay some rock in it if you want that kind of look. My parents had a large patio made like that, and it lasted for years, if a rock came loose, my dad just put it back in, not sure what he used to keep it in, that was too many years ago.

  • We have that problem with deer and mud. We solve it every year by spreading a think layer of cedar or pine shavings available from Tractor Supply.

Make the area gravel (river rock is rounded and would be gentler on the dog's feet). Or pavers would work too.

Perhaps do something permanent, if you plan to stay there for the long-term. As suggested by others laying concrete pavers would be a good solution or maybe even consider drawing out a plan and having a sidewalk poured where they repeatedly run.....otherwise you'll continue just making-do and never resolve the real issue. Sometime it's best to just go ahead, though it may be an expense you didn't count on, to get it done correctly and spare yourself much frustration.

Thanks so much for the suggestions! Don’t want to put any kind of rocks in the yard as it’s a large grass lawn that needs regular cutting. I’ve had bad experiences with rocks and lawn movers! Has anyone tried crushed limestone? I think I know what that is but would like to see if someone had any experience with it.

You can try river rock, its fairly cheap, and won't tend to scatter too bad

I am having the same problem. I am thinking of putting down sand along the fence line...I believe my mowers used herbicide to prevent trimming as I only have a tiny dog that is only out for short time..but gets muddy feet from the fence line...so looking for solutions same as you

Hello Iris, your best bet for this is to lay landscape fabric down and add in some nice washed rock, it will take the beating t=from the dogs and still look great, be sure to add edging.

You could still add pavers just use a shovel and cut out an area so they lay flat with the grass.
