If you decide to go the essential oil route that is so popular at the moment, beware, they can be harmful to your pets, birds and cats are particularly susceptible. Check with your vet before purchasing. Even "organic" or "100% pure" may only contain 5% oil and the rest is a chemical carrier.
Karen you can also purchase candles or wax warmers. There are so many different fragrances. You can change them to what you like even by seasons.

I use Bath and Body wallflowers. I have 2 in our 1700 sq foot house. I use the same scent in both and it seems to do great.

I use a lavender spray made just for the home and linens. All natural linen spray in lilac on Amazon
I think certain cleaners like Murphy's oil soap smell good. Cooking smells good. Sometimes I just spray a little extra cologne around, but mostly open windows, clean line hung linens, soaps in lingerie drawers and linen closets, fresh flowers. new paint, certain cleaning products. I don't really like diffusers or anything heavy.
These are all good “additions”, what about “subtracting” the source of the smell?
HEPA filter on the vacuum
Merv 11 filter on the furnace, change every 3-6 months.
