Depending on how much mold or mildew is on the siding, the following cleaning options can make quick work of the unwelcome fungi:
Light staining
Water
Light to medium staining
Vinegar solution (30% vinegar to 70% water)
Simple green
Medium to heavy staining
Laundry detergent solution (⅓ cup laundry detergent, ⅓ cup powdered household cleaner, one-quart of laundry bleach, one gallon of water)
Siding cleaning solution
Bleach solution
Heavy staining
Powerwash
Step 4: Clean it up. Use a soft-bristled brush to lightly scrub away mold and mildew stains for all solutions. A garden sprayer can be helpful in applying the various cleaning solutions to the siding. Follow directions on any siding cleaner or power washer.
Hi Patty, boy do I know about this problem - high humidity where I live. If you don't have a pressure washer or want to rent one from an equipment rental place, you can do it the old fashioned way with a screw on type stiff bristle brush on the end of a paint extension pole. Use a solution of 1 part bleach to 10 parts water in a pump sprayer. Let sit for about 10 minutes, then use the brush with a bucket of 1/4 part white vinegar to 1 part water. Rinse well. If there are plants where you will be washing, water well before and after you clean.
I recently read a article the says bleach is not the best cleaner for out door mold. The bleach will get rid of what you see but not the problem. The bleach evaporates too fast. Oxiclean or bleach alternative is best. 1:5 ratio is recommended. This will not evaporate and it will kill the mold roots as well. This is safer around most plants as well. I hope this helps. Good luck.
We bought a product that is supposed to remove mold front the side of the house. It came in a spray bottle that you screw on to your garden hose. It worked a little but left a lot. We decided to fill that screw on bottle with regular household bleach and it worked like a charm. Also keeps it off for a while. We wet down our shrubbery and rinsed it well after. Now the big home improvement stores sell Clorox Outdoor Bleach. It won't hurt plants. However, wear old clothes. Anything you wear will get bleached.
