Hi Bobbie Jo - your best bet is going to be to sand off the older stain. If you want to paint over it, that might work, but because stain is transparent, you will see the walnut thru the gray unless you sand it off. Good luck!
If you're looking to keep the walnut stain and make it look weathered, get a gray one and with a dry brush technique over it. Test it in a small unseen spot first.
