Fill with dryer sheets
Depends on what kind of stuff. I've had good luck with putting things outside in direct sunlight for a day or two. If it's a fabric item, wash it with some distilled white vinegar. That has worked well for me in the past.
I'm a huge fan of baking soda. You can set a box of baking soda where the smells are, sprinkle it onto things like couches and let it sit and then vacuum up.
