First, find the source of the moisture and eliminate it.

Next, place Damp Rid products throughout the house to pull all the excess moisture out of the air. I prefer the ones that hang but they also have buckets.

Finally, clean. You can clean with white cleaning vinegar which will kill any mold spores that exist on surfaces. Odo-Ban is a good disinfectant and odor eliminating product.

I agree with Kathy that locating and eliminating the source is step one. Get air circulating with windows open and fans. A dehumidifier may be your best bet if the basement is the source.

Invest in a dehumidifer. Works great

In addition to Kathy's advice, I would add that a dehumidify may be required versus those Damp Rid throughout the house. If the odor is eminating from the damp basement, install a fan in one of the basement vents/windows to get air movement and add your dehumidifier. You may also want to paint the walls with one of the basement waterproofing paints.

Open two windows upstairs opposite each other and put one fan in the window to exhaust the air flow, and on the opposite wall put a fan in the window to blow fresh air in. Just a few hours a day will greatly improve the situation.

If all those don't work, buy some Room Shocker pots that contractor use to remove all kinds of undesirable odors. Get them at Lowes', Home Depot, Walmart, Amazon.

If you live in a hot humid climate and have an attic, install a vent fan to exhaust the humid air.
