If it gets warm enough, I’d open the windows for a while. I’d also replace any of the previous owner’s curtains or carpeting if you can.

Clean, clean, clean everything! Vinegar does help so use it when you can. The vinegar smell will dissipate. Wash walls and then repaint--don't forget the closets! Clean the carpeting with an odor removing carpet cleaner or remove it and install new flooring. Carpet will really hold the smoke odor. Any furniture from previous odors will hold the smoke odor as well--especially upholstered furniture. Get fresh air moving as many times as you can.

Room Shocker is what contractors use, you can buy it at Home Depot, Lowes or on Amazon or directly from Biocide .... https://www.biocidesystems.com/room-shocker-clo2-odor-eliminator-quick-release-vapor-2?sscid=c1k3_kdozu I would get the 4 pk for a house.

Open your windows if possible and get as much fresh air as you can. Also, clean with bleach, everything.

you can put 1 cup white vinegar in a pan with a cup of water and let it boil slowly that will remove odors also one drop of vanilla on a cotton ball or paper towel put in closets, and in rooms will remove strong odors

I recommend calling in a smoke removal company. They use chemical sponges that go much deeper than you could possibly go with a DIY solution. You just moved in so it is worth having it done right.

You may have to repaint the walls to get the nicotine off. You will have to prime first then paint.

Hi Lindsay, yes we had the same problem. Nasty smoke smell. I had to wash down all the wood work and walls. I used lots of plug ins and candles. Good luck.

Apparently, you can rent ozone cleaners at Home Depot. Close all windows. Make sure people and pets exit. Powerful - may fade furnishings, etc. Probably better to use before moving in, but smokers use it when getting ready to sell.

You have to change the wallpaper or treat the walls.

I didn't know what fresh air was after I moved in, because the windows were practically stuck to the main frame. I had to call a housekeeper, I couldn't have done it myself. I had the guys at cleanproguttercleaning.com help me clean the gutters from the pile of cigarette butts. During the quarantine period, I had so many dirty dishes piled up in my kitchen that I already had the thought of throwing them out and replacing them with disposable ones. I rarely cook for myself, except for throwing different vegetables and meat in the multicooker, and also occasionally rice. And I will not wash anything else, especially the kitchen hood, gutter and toilet.
