Vinegar in the rinse will replace fabric softener.
I use wool and plastic knob dryer balls in the dryer. Also make sure you don't over dry, grab out of the dryer as soon as the buzzer sounds.
I use about 1/2 cup white vinegar in the rinse cycle, no fabric softener. In the clothes dryer I use 2-3 tennis balls.
I use vinegar instead of Downey. It helps to reduce the amount of soap buildup in the clothes/fabrics. and keep them soft.

How much vinegar do you use to soften laundry?
For a regular full load you can use ¼ cup of vinegar
For yellowing, soak the clothes overnight in a mixture of one part vinegar and 12 parts water. The following day, put it in the washing machine on the rinse cycle with half a cup of vinegar to really bring back the white. For a stain spot treatment, apply undiluted vinegar to stain and wash immediately.

Wool dryer balls or Nellie's dryer balls in the dryer. They both soften the fabric without chemicals or additives of any kind. Hitting the clothing in the dryer is what keeps the fabric soft.
White vinegar is what you need, do not use detergent when using the white vinegar.
I use lemon solution on white clothes
I use dryer balls and love how fluffy things come out of the dryer.
How hard is your water?
For a more permanent odour-less solution, purchase a water softener. Besides giving you laundry that is softer, it will also save you money over time on soap, as soft water does not require as much laundry soap to get the clothes just as clean.
I love wool dryer balls! I use about 4 of them and I add a little essential oil (lavender).
You can use dryer balls in your dryer. There are many different kinds from plastic to wool. We have used the wool dryer balls and they work well.
Just put in the dryer with a dryer sheet.....
I think baking soda will help read the box
I would caution you about using too much vinegar. Some fabrics tend to retain the smell for a long time, which you may find overpowering or unpleasant when putting towels or bed linens close to your face.
