Do you use your normal food processor to grate soap?

I've made powdered homemade laundry detergent 3 times now. The first two times, I used the Fels Naptha and just grated it with a square hand-held grater that has 4 different grating sides. The other day, I decided to try 1 bar of Fels Naptha and 1 bar of pink Zote. I found the Zote was softer and much stickier than the Fels so it did not grate up as fine with the hand grater. I went ahead and grated all the Zote with the hand grater, then got out my food processor, added the grated Zote plus a good amount of baking soda to keep the Zote from gumming up into a ball or sticking to the blades, sides etc. Worked like a charm and practically pulverized the Zote into little fine bits. (This would be an especially good method for anyone who prefers to wash in cold water and is afraid the Fels Naptha or Zote will not dissolve in cold water.) Essentially, you can use whatever grating method is easiest for you and works best for your washing machine.

Thanks Shari will keep in mind what you said about mixing - is it safe to do it in your normal food processor - in other words can you get the soap smell and taste out of your bowl? As you probably guessed this will be my first time to do this also. Margie

I have had no problems with lingering soap smell (or taste). When I use the hand grater, I even grate into my favorite large Tupperware mixing bowl (the one I always use to mix up cake mixes etc.) and again, I've had no problems. When we eat cake or something chopped in the food processor, we aren't blowing soap bubbles...yet. :::giggles::: My thinking is it is basically no different than washing or soaking the grater, plastic bowl or food processor bowl in dish detergent. Soap is soap. Right? I've been making my own powdered laundry detergent for well over a year. I love it so much I can't imagine me ever wanting to go back to store bought detergent now!
