  • I use this for inside the water spouts. It is amazing because it will clean those hard to reach tiny holes without having to scrub https://chemistrycachet.com/the-best-way-to-remove-mold-mildew/

    Hi Tom,

Your question is not silly at all. In fact, thanks for asking it, because I’m running low and need to make some more myself!

I try as much as possible to use homemade cleaners without chemicals and odors. Also the commercial cleaners don’t always work all that well.

The recipe I use is non-toxic, so you don’t need to worry about getting on your skin. It cleans, disinfects and deodorizes exceptionally well. As an added bonus, it creates somewhat of a bond with the porcelain surface so your toilet bowl remains cleaner for a longer period of time. By this, I mean there is a bit of a sheeting action, much like the product Rain-X does for your car windshield.

Below is the basic recipe. I usually triple or quadruple it when I’m filling a container. I use an empty commercial toilet bowl squeeze bottle, but you could use any container that has the ability to squirt up under the toilet bowl rim. I mix the recipe in a jar or other container that I can shake to mix well and then I transfer with a funnel to the squeeze bottle.

    Ingredients

    1/4 C liquid Castile soap (I like Dr. Bronner‘s)

    1 1/3 C warm water

    2 Tbs. baking soda

10-20 drops essential oil (found at natural food stores in the vitamin/supplement section). Lemontree oil is the very best at anti-bacterial/disinfecting. It is a bit more expensive than the other oils, but it lasts a long time as you’re not using that much.

    Directions

Completely coat the toilet bowl with the cleaner, just as you would with the commercial type. Then immediately start using your toilet brush to scrub the bowl. It is not necessary to let this cleaner sit for a while it like you would a commercial product. Flush, and that’s it. You may need to repeat if your toilet has not been cleaned for a while. But again, you will find that this cleaner is so effective that you will be able to go longer periods of time between cleanings.

Thanks for your question, I love sharing these homemade recipes!

You can make a cleanser combining vinegar and baking soda. Adding essential oils is beneficial as well such as tea tree oil.

If you need a little more power you can combine borax and vinegar with essential oils.
