There has been several hacks on lately about using baking soda and white vinegar. I'd try mixing some up and using a toothbrush carefully scrub the handles then wipe them down with clean water and dry. You might even add a little dish detergent so it sticks better while your scrubbing. Seems like that would work.

Is the finish wearing off of some of the handles? You can take the handles off the doors and repaint them with something like Rustoleum. You will need to sand them down a little so the paint adheres, clean them off real well and then spray paint them in thin coats to prevent runs. They have many metallic finishes now and even textures to choose from.

I would use rubbing alcohol soaked cotton balls.

Are they solid brass? Brass accent, like painted on. Do you have a picture?

Kelli is right--you need to know what you are dealing with. If lacquered brass, black means the lacquer has allowed air to penetrate and the black is tarnish. If brass plated, and the plating is thin, the black may be where the plating is wearing off. If paint, same issue. The solutions differ though. So you need to know what material you are dealing with.

Tomato juice, ketchup, lemon juice with salt will all clean and make the brass shine due to the acidic nature of each.
