How can I organize my artist studio/craft studio?

I need ideas for storing my paints, canvases, brushes, finished paintings, magazines and craft supplies such as glitter, glues, dried flowers, heat gun, and torches. I am working in a spare bedroom that isn't very large.

Go Vertical. Get the most economical modular shelving units that you can find.

And then, go to the dollar store and get fabric bins, plastic bins and other small bins that you can stock and write on their ends the contents, with colored Sharpies.

Organize what ever category makes sense to you, color?, Function?, size,?

it is your domain, and so the organization has to be what makes sense to your brain.

    = domain rhymes with brain🤷🏼‍♀️

I love organizing with plastic tubs. Costco always has sweater boxes for great prices.

Hi Harthula, I just did this and I am so happy! We put up metal pegboard panels. We found them at Lowes. You can use regular plastic pegboard panels too. (Home Depot) What I like about the panels are that it sticks out from the wall. Regular mdf pegboard panels you have to apply something to the back or frame it in order for it to stick out where you can hang hooks. The panels eliminates that extra step. I also love the metal panels because you can use magnets too if you want. In my workroom we put 5 pegboard panels up for all my tools. We also put up large shelving for extra storage for all my hoarding supplies. But, if there is anything I can hang on the pegboards...I hang it on a hook instead of being on a shelf in a container that gets lost. All of my paint brushes are hanging on the pegboards as well. This way I can see everything. I still have to figure out my PAINT bottles. I was thinking of using a hanging shoe organizer for my paints. I am still trying to figure out the best idea where I will be able to see everything easy. As for big stuff that can hang on a wall(my ventilation mask, or my large metal rulers, I don't want to take up space on the pegboard so I find wall space and hang a gorilla hook or command hook. Just a few ideas.

  • Your best bet for ideas is to try the search box in the upper left on Hometalk and type in a few key words. You'll get loads of ideas back to sift through and figure out what will work best for you.

A large table (counter height) is awesome in a craft area. Depending on the size of the room, much storage space can be available beneath the table for supplies.

  • I love using mason jars to organize smaller items. There are also utility carts you could buy (IKEA has a great one as does Michaels and Target).

    Hi Harthula,

Fit out a wardrobe or cupboard with shelves and racks. Use clips on the inside of doors for small trays and clips to hold the jars. Stack canvases on top and finished work on the walls, rotating them........
