    Cellar, not basement, correct?

I would make sure the cellar has a dehumidifier & is kept insect/rodent free, first.

What is the light and the convenience outlet situation down there? Safe electrical is essential and I would buy a plug/strip that has a surge protector.

How is the Indoor Air Quality? Many cellars have mildew/mold as well as chemical residues of the days when arsenic and DDT were used as rodent and pest control. Maybe you need a HEPA filter down there?

I would use resin/plastic shelving, and put a solid core door spanning two opposing shelving units for my work surface. A chair or a bar stool- once again, resin, like patio furniture.

    Hello Karen,

Is the cellar dry? Otherwise it will have to be Tanked, as it would be pointless to continue if not.

In ours, humidity has always been the problem. We have heat down there in the winter, and a dehumidifier that runs all year. I don't think it's space that would work. If yours is dry, and you have heat in the winter, you need lots of light, good air circulation, a work table, and plenty of storage.

First, have it checked for radon.

Hell again, I would paint the walls with Roofix. It is a paint that gives a waterproof seal. The only thing is, it is black! You would need to insulate the walls and clad with something you could fix shelves to. Store items in Polythene storage boxes and label them up. Make a workspace area for yourself. Maybe in the centre of the room so that you don't feel hemmed in and allowing you to move all around. Fit a large Mirror or two in there if you have no windows (will bounce about the light you do have, and be useful to look at your work from a distance too. Electrical sockets and ofcourse lighting are very important. ( Heaters/Dehumidifier/Fan etc.) Flooring is also something that should be watertight and insulated. Enjoy the space and best wishes.......
