Get a thread holder to keep all your spools of thread accessible and visible. I fold all my fabric and store it in neat piles by color. All my sewing supplies, including my scissors, are in a carousel caddy on my sewing table. My cutting boards and rotary cutters are all hung on the wall for easy access. My seam bindings, etc are in a narrow file caddy and I buy the open canvas storage boxes to keep each project in that I am working on at the moment. Hope this helps!

I like jars or old canisters for storage. I keep fabric in old dressers, so the dust is controlled. A dowel rod keeps spools of ribbon under control. I made a pocket on my ironing board cover with a few pockets for pin cushion, shears and clips for thread or fabric trimming while ironing, ans storage of iron cleaning preps. I have an old shallow drawer (center desk drawer) with finishing nails hanging on wall where my thread is mounted, with matching bobbin attached with loops of ribbon threaded through the spool and looped back over the bobbin. Old crates (some painted, some not) line one wall and form a ledge. Different bins in crates hold patterns, notions, books and magazines, drawing/pattern making supplies, and projects. Ledge holds lights, sleeve boards and tailor's ham, serger...

I'm not that much of a sewer, but I encountered much the same problem with my arts and crafts items. The most helpful thing I came up with is to acquire as many glass jars, as I can. Large and small. Perhaps it's my age (75 yr old) that with so many things to keep track of, I like to be able to see things at a glance. I do use lots of lace, lots of buttons and small items like beads and jewelry, so being able to see what I have and where I put them is very helpful.

Glass jars also have the advantage of cleaning up nicely. Many of my jars are reused pickle, mason jars and sauce jars; many I have picked up at thrift shops and/or garage sales - never more than $1. I have jars that are 3-4 gallons in size and some smaller than a spice jar. You can always paint the lids, glue or attach knobs, and gussy up if plain and ordinary are not in your nature.

I also like to use those little plastic containers that I buy Crystal lite in. I wrap my lace around the outside and put bits and pieces inside. Now these I gather together and store in a large plastic container to avoid a dust problem.

I also have an "Idea board" when I pin fragments of material, lace, beads etc, when my "project" is still in the developing stages. I find this useful, least I forget - once again.
