I can't be productive in a messy environment. Everything must have a permanent home so that I can grab things easily when I need them. Dishes for paperclips and binder clips, pen and pencil holders, rules, scissors and other implements in a drawer, little basket for post it notes, bins for mail, one for bills, one for magazines, one for coupons and one for everything else. File folders neatly organized and labeled, i.e. each one of my pets has their own file folder.
Take a day or weekend to clear the decks and organize everything and stick to a routine. I sort the mail every day (and I get a lot), and sit down and file what needs filing once a week after paying bills. Once you have a system that works for you, stick with it.
Or hire a professional organizer for a half day to come help you out!
Organization using baskets, stacking shelves, containers for pens/pencils, shelves, and anything else there might be to help you. Good luck.
If you have a file cabinet or a metal cabinet in your office, you can go to Dollar tree and get magnetic paper clip holders and all kinds of holders for your desk. I got the magnetic paper clip holders (one for small clips and one for large clips.) They work well, won't spill out and are attached to the file cabinet. :)
