I was asked to participate in a Hometalk DIY project using burlap. I also just so happened to be making candles using Dollar Tree emergency candles....my latest craze.
Plain ole Dollar Tree candle
I like having emergency candles around for storms but they are usually very plain so I tend to spruce them up--that way they can be kept out all the time or at least look nice when you use them.
First step is to add some burlap around the middle. I use weldbond glue and after gluing the edges together, I make a slurry with a little water and glue and paint the whole piece of burlap so it doesn't unravel. It makes it very hard.
Next I glue on shells, sea glass, and a little starfish to the burlap. This is where you use your own imagination and decorate it for your decor. You could put flowers or cinnamon or steampunk or just about any decorative item on the burlap. It's up to you.
I braided a piece of raffia and glued on two pieces of sea glass just for a bit more decoration and wrapped it around the top. All done.
Suggested materials:
  • Burlap   (Walmart)
  • Candle   (Dollar Tree)
  • Shells and sea glass   (Beach)
