Decoupage Thrift Store Plates

Sometimes I work backwards. Most people would buy decorative plates, then a plate rack. I started with the rack and let it hang empty on the wall for...too long.

I never could find the perfect plates that I loved. So, in the spirit of the true DIY-er, I just made my own. icon

I started at one of my favorite destinations - the thrift store. These simple, 50-cent plates were perfect.

I envisioned an Old World look - which is probably why I had such a hard time finding exactly what I wanted. I finally found these map-printed card stock pages at Hobby Lobby.

Perfect - again!

I used Mod Podge for paper, and gave each plate a good coating, then wrapped a piece of card stock over the plate, smoothed it into the curve of the plate and over the sides.

This card stock is a little thicker than paper, but not as thick as regular white card stock, so it worked really well for this project. It was thick enough to resist tearing, yet thin enough to easily work with.

Next, I unfolded the backing, added more Mod Podge, and secured the paper to the edges .

Easy, peasy!

Using a craft knife, I trimmed off the excess paper.

For the last step, I added a second layer of Mod Podge to seal, and let them dry.

No more empty plate rack!

I really enjoy seeing other people's talent in crafts, but if I did this project, it would look like plates with paper stuck on them.

I love your idea!!!
I too, tend to work backwards sometimes. I have a plate rack that I use but I’ve been wanting to do something more festive for the Christmas holiday. This gave me a great idea for our “girls craft day” today with 2 of my daughters and 2 nieces!!! Hopefully I can post pictures later.
