The 4th of July is always one of my favorite holiday's. I love cooking out with the family, hanging by the pool, the fireworks and all the red, white and blue decor! This year I had the idea to make an American "flag" to hang in our dining room...and I love how it turned out!

Supplies needed:

Red, white and blue fabric - about 1/2 yard each

Cotton lace

One 1/2 inch dowel rod - cut to 24 inches long

Twine or cotton string

Fabric scissors

I used 3 different red fabrics for the red striped part of the flag, because I wanted it to look more rustic. You can do this or use all the same fabric- depending on the look you want.

First cut your red and white fabric into strips. Mine were 1 inch wide x 31 inches long. I cut 10 strips of each red fabric (so I had 30 pieces) and then cut 20 pieces of the white fabric. I also cut 10 strips of the cotton lace the same length. I had 2 different thickness's- so 5 of each.

Next I tied some cotton string to my dowel rod, so it could hang on the wall. This also will set up the space that you have to tie your fabric strips too.

Then I started tying the strips of fabric to the dowel rod. I started with the red strips- tying each fabric once, so there were 3 strips per stripe. For the white stripes, I used 2 white fabric strips with 1 strip of the cotton lace in between. Continue alternating stripes, until you have covered the dowel rod.

Next I cut about a 16"x16" square from the blue star fabric.

Then I cut an even amount (this is important since you are going to tie them) of about 2-3 inch deep strips into the top of the blue fabric square.

Then I cut 3 pieces of the cotton string (long enough to attach it to the dowel rod) and placed one piece in the slit between the first two strips I cut. Then just tie the first 2 strips together- with the cotton sting hanging out of both sides.

Continue tying all the strips together on the top of your blue piece of fabric- inserting the other 2 pieces of string into the middle knot and the end one. This is so you can attach the blue fabric easily. Tying the knots at the top will also give it a gathered look- with no sewing!

Then lay the blue piece of fabric over the left side of your dowel rod, and attach it to the flag with the pieces of string. These should be easy to hide in the back of the flag, so they aren't seen.
