DIY Painted Wood Slice Heart

The winter can be a bit dark and dreary so I love to decorate my mantle to brighten up my home during the season. Valentine's day is a great excuse the decorate and the bright reds and pinks associate the holiday really help brighten things up. Already this year I made some cute bottle lights and have just added to them with a colorful painted wood slice heart for my Valentine's decoration.
I used these small wood slices. They can easily be bought in craft stores or you can make your own from simply sawing an old branch.
I also used this old picture frame that I picked up very cheaply from my local thrift/charity shop.
First, I removed the old picture and glass from the frame. Then I spray painted it red for a more seasonal look.
Next, I painted the wood slices in stripes following the natural rings of the wood. I used paints in various shades of reds and pinks.
I used double sided mounting tape to stick my painted wood slices to on to some backing card.
I stuck the wood slices down one by one into a heart shape.
I then mounted this wood slice heart into the red painted picture frame.
I love how this wood slice heart looks on the mantle piece. The best bit about it is that it completely matches the upcycled sweater rug I made last year in the same colors.
