This DIY Leprechaun Hat project is so easy, and cheap to make. You can knock lots of them in a few hours.

St. Patrick’s Day wouldn’t be anything without mischievous leprechauns. So when I was thinking of items I needed on my St. Patrick’s Day tablescape, I immediately knew that I needed to make something that connected to a leprechaun.

And what better than a simple Leprechaun hat diy project!

Supplies for DIY Leprechaun Hat Table Decoration

  • Terracotta pots (I used 2” and 4”)
  • Green spray paint
  • Newspaper (to protect your surface)
  • Black electrical tape
  • Gold cardstock (1 small piece – you won’t need much)
  • Glue & scissors

How to Make an Easy DIY St. Patrick’s Day Leprechaun Hat Table Decoration

Step 1: Paint the Leprechaun hat diy green

Layout newspaper on the surface you will be spray painting. *Note: little particles of spray paint go far, so cover more surface area than you think necessary.

Put terracotta pot open-end down on the newspaper.

Spray one light coat of green paint, covering the pot(s). Don’t spray too much, or the paint will drip and won’t look good.

Let dry for 30 minutes and spray a second light coat of paint. If needed, spray a third coat.

Step 2: Make the black band for your diy Leprechaun hat

Once the pot is completely dry (approximately 1 hour), measure the area around the pot where you want to place the black band. Add ¼ – ½ inch.

Cut electrical tape to this length.

Take one end and line it up on the side of the pot. As you work around the pot, slightly stretch the tape, so that it lays flat on the pot.

I chose electrical tape because of its ability to stretch. This enables it to lay flat and not pucker against the pot. Plus, you can easily reposition it.

*If you prefer to not first measure around the pot for the tape, you can apply it directly to the pot and cut it once the ends meet.

Step 3: Add the gold buckle to the band

Cut squares from the gold cardstock the same width (or a little larger) as the electrical tape.

Cut small squares of the electrical tape, so they are smaller than the squares of the gold cardstock. Put one in the middle of the gold cardstock. This is your “buckle” for the diy leprechaun hat.

Glue the gold buckle onto the black electrical tape.

Fini! Step back and admire your handiwork.

Enjoy your diy Leprechaun hat on your St. Patrick’s Day table, or as part of your St. Patrick’s Day decor.
