- Yarn
- Cardboard or Foamboard
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Yarn Needle
First, print out the heart template or draw your own!
Cut out the heart template.
Trace around the outside of the template onto the cardboard with a pencil. Make sure the corrugation is going vertical.
Follow the pencil lines with scissors to cut the heart out of cardboard.
Start the yarn by holding one end with your thumb.
Then start to wrap the yarn around the cardboard heart, covering the end to keep it in place. Don’t pull too tight or the cardboard could start to crumple.
Once the yarn starts slipping move to another section and wrap.
Continue to wrap the yarn around the cardboard heart. Working at the top is the easiest way to get the bottom covered.
Try to work in ways that cover the cardboard areas without a lot of overlap to keep the heart less bulky.
Wrapping some horizontal areas will help keep the rest of the yarn in place.
Once covered, I added a few extra wraps to make a more interesting looking final heart. Snip the extra.
Tuck the end into the previous wraps with the eye of the yarn needle.
Now rinse and repeat. If you want to add a hanger, keep reading.
Cut a length of yarn about twice the length you want the yarn wrapped heart to hang.
Thread one end of the yarn through the eye of the needle and put the needle through some of the yarn on the back of the heart. Make sure the needle is going under the yarn and not piercing through the yarn itself.
Pull the needle through and pull the yarn until it is even at the top.
Tie a knot at the top to create a loop.
Pull the loop to hide the knot under the yarn. You may need to use the needle again to help push it under.
