I Ate My Thanksgiving Centerpiece!

Okay, so Thanksgiving isn’t here yet but I did eat the trial run of my centerpiece, most of it anyway.
We are lucky to have a year round farmers market where the majority of farmers are under an hour away – local at its finest. Quite a few are certified organic and most do not use pesticides or commercial fertilizers – another very good thing. I thought you might be interested to see where everything came from so I snapped a few photos at the market when I was buying all the bounty.
Now tell me true, if your Thanksgiving arrangement is made with mums, roses and fall foliage, can you eat it after turkey day is over? I think not. I have already consumed most of the centerpiece and this is what I did (or will do) with it.

Red Kale – sauteed with the garlic & lemon

Pomegranates – gone into smoothies & a quinoa dish

Brussel Sprouts – shredded & stir fried with garlic & balsamic vinegar

Persimmons – the Hachiyas are not soft yet but will be scooped out & put in oatmeal

Kabocha & Carnival squashes – these will be used for soup

Eggplant & Lipstick peppers – stir fried with soba noodles

Fava Beans – steamed & then sauteed with garlic & lemon for a pasta dish.

Lemons, limes & garlic are staples in my house.
The Lavender Scallop cuttings are going to a friend, the palm fronds have gone into the compost and those adorable little Tillandsias will be used to make Christmas ornaments (I’ll be sure to take pictures to share with you!).

You may not have everything available to you in THIS PIECE I did but you can always substitute in apples, pears, foliages or berries and make an edible creation of your own. Happy Thanksgiving everyone – may your centerpiece taste as good as it looks!
