Patriotic Centerpiece Tutorial - Life as a LEO Wife - Seasonal Decor
I recently found some red, white, and blue dinner and salad plates for a summer tablescape, but I still needed a patriotic centerpiece to go with it. Yesterday I put one together, so today I am sharing the tutorial with you so you can create your own! In the next few days I will be sharing the entire tablescape with you.
To make your patriotic centerpiece you need (from Dollar Tree unless noted):
- metal flower pot with twine top edge or other bucket
- patriotic print bandanas
- mod podge
- foam brush
- craft glue
- scissors
Prepare Fabric Scraps
First off make your patriotic star wreath using one of your red, white, and blue themed bandanas from Dollar Tree. This will leave you with the scraps of leftover fabric that you will need for this project. Who doesn’t want two for one projects?! When trying to use one solid piece of fabric to cover the flower pot or bucket, it looks off. The pot is wider toward the top and thinner at the bottom, so when you have it snug at the top, it causes waves and twists and just plain ugly fitting at the bottom. Using the scraps from the wreath works perfectly.
If you don’t make the wreath, cut sections of your bandana out. I made some random cuts and also cut out some of the wording carefully; like “4th of July” and sections that said “Celebrate” and “Let Freedom Ring.” You can do either or both for this, that’s the beauty of it! I didn’t get a picture of all of the pieces laid out, but here are a few that were left.
Begin Mod Podge-ing
If you are using the same pot that I am, you will need to unwind your twine from the top of it a bit. That will allow you to put the fabric up closer to the top and then cover the uneven edge with the twine again. Dip your foam brush into the Mod Podge and brush it on the section of the flower pot where you want to begin.
Place a piece of fabric on top of the glue and smooth it out.
Continue adding Mod Podge and fabric until your flower pot is covered. If you need to, you can cut pieces to fit into any bare spots. I added my 4th of July fabric to the middle of one side so I can display that side during the 4th season and turn it for Memorial and Labor Days. Make sure to add your fabrics until just above the line where the twine will end when you put it back on.
Now that the pot is covered, brush a layer of Mod Podge on top of the fabric scraps. This will seal them on to the patriotic centerpiece.
Finally use your craft glue or Mod Podge to adhere your twine back on to the pot. This will cover the top edge of the fabric. Squeeze the glue along the top of your flower pot and lay the twine along it, continuing until you run out of twine.
Add Flowers and Flags
Your centerpiece base is finished! All you need to do now is add some greenery, flags, flowers, or those little picks with sparklies on them. Place some floral foam inside the flower pot. Place your faux red, white, and blue flowers into it, spreading them out to fill the entire pot nicely. Next add your flags and other picks. I placed two flags in the middle of the foam, tilting one to the left and the other to the right. In between those I placed a pick with silver glitter stars with smaller red and blue ones in the middle of it. To hide the floral foam, I added leftover pieces of my bandana. I think it turned out nicely!
