Don't carve them until about a week before
Don't cut them and don't get them wet. I have actually dried uncut small pumpkins to use in future years. They will do okay if they are wet for a bit but not sitting in it. But after they are cut, their lifespan is short.
I have heard you can soak the pumpkins in a bleach/water solution to preserve them for a longer period of time. I have not tried it but maybe it works! Here is the info: https://www.wikihow.com/Preserve-a-Pumpkin
Carved pumpkins can rot in as little as 3 days since their skin has been opened and bacteria can get. A soaking in 2 gallons of water to 1/4 cup of bleach can help, but will only give you another week max. I suggest that you wait until a week before Halloween to carve the pumpkin. I've also heard that putting the little silica packets that you get with over the counter meds (and in some accessories like purses and shoes) can help absorb moisture. Although I've never tried it, you can also try putting some rice in the bottom to absorb the moisture responsible for rotting.
