Whimsical St. Patrick's Day Centerpiece

Our weather is warming up and I’m getting ready for spring time! First up for spring time holidays is St. Patrick’s Day. This fun St. Patrick's Day Centerpiece is easy to put together and it's very budget friendly!
I thought about making the hat from a container like a coffee can and covering it with some felt and other fabric. But, I was at Party City recently looking for some Valentine’s Day items and I spotted this hat. It was only $2.00. It would have cost at least that much for felt and fabric to cover a can and circle for the base.
Using a hat already made meant that I needed to rethink how I planned on adding items to the center. Using an X-Acto knife, I cut around the top of the hat. I wasn’t worried about being precise because I knew it would be covered by the items I’d be adding.
I filled the hat with tissue paper and added a cardboard circle to the underside of the hat. It’s hot glued to the hat to hold everything inside. (Cardboard not pictured)
The fun part was deciding what pieces I wanted to add to the hat. Flowers from the Dollar Tree worked great for this. I removed the stems using wire cutters.
I found a few other Dollar Tree items to use as well – gold coins, beads, shamrock sign,  and boas. This fun headband came from Party City. I love the variety of pieces it has.

I’d like to say I had a specific design in mind when I started, but the truth is I don’t often have a final design idea when I’m putting together decor pieces. Most of the wreaths I make are done through adding, taking away, and adding something else until I get a look that I like. That’s the same way I put this St. Patrick’s Day Centerpiece together.
I used a strand of Dollar Tree gold beads and a green boa to cover the rough edges of the cutout. I added in some shamrock cupcake picks.

It was at this point that I began placing items in the hat vase, rearranging them, removing some, adding more until I was happy with the look. To secure the pieces I attached a small dowel and covered it with a green pipe cleaner. Using a small piece of cardboard, covered in green felt, the item was glued to the cardboard and then placed inside the hat.
Because I’m planning on using this as a centerpiece, I didn’t want the back side of it to look bare. I glued some green ribbon and white tulle to the stem of the tall shamrock piece. I added more of the gold coins to the center
I’m looking forward to putting together a St. Patrick’s Day Tablescape with my Leprechaun Hat Vase as the centerpiece!

Our St. Patrick's Day Parade by local Irish-American's passes only 11/2 blocks away from our house so we get a crowd for lunch after the parade passes - this will be a great centerpiece to re-create for our first post-pandemic parade party! Now, to get inspired for the next weekend's centerpiece & door decoration for the parade party for St. Joseph's Day by the Italian Americans!
