It's actually my birthday on Valentine's day! But I still like to share the love by giving small treats to my nearest and dearest on the day. In the past, I've made upcycled heart-shaped map treat bags to give this time I used denim pockets.

I've made popular rainbow hanging denim pockets before (see here), this time I used hearts as my theme.

What you need for this project is an old denim pocket, a scrap of fabric and a heart shape cookie cutter.

Use the back pocket on a pair of jeans. Cut the pocket out with a pair of scissors as close to the seam as possible. Keep the back of the pocket intact.

Turn the pocket inside out and draw a heart on it using a template, such as a heart-shaped cookie cutter.

Paste some Fray Stop or fabric glue around the heart. This will stop the denim from fraying when cut.

When the glue has dried carefully cut out the heart shape with a pair of small sharp scissors.

Turn the pocket right sides out.

Next, get a patterned piece of cotton fabric large enough to cover the hole and iron on some interfacing on it to stiffen it.

Pin the fabric scrap inside the pocket so that it covers the heart hole.

Then using embroidery thread blanket stitch around the heart and denim hole. (details of the stitch on the blog)

Keep the pocket open with your hand as you stitch, to make sure you don't go through to the back of the pocket.

Next, when you have finished stitching, turn the pocket inside out again and cut away any excess fabric.

Make a handle for your pocket, either using a seam from a pair of jeans or a scrap of leather. Simply sew this into the top of the pocket. More details on the blog (link in bio at the end).

Fill your pockets with Valentine's treats and give them to your loved ones.

I have lots more ideas for using denim pockets on my blog which you can see here.

Will make these a little simpler to keep up with all those pesky cell phones.

OR, you can donate your old jeans to someone who needs them and use scraps of fabric or even buy remnants (for a minimal price) to make your treasures.

Yes, that's a good idea too. But many of my old jeans are worn and have holes, so I upcycle them. They are not suitable for donation.
