We wanted a creative way to present gift cards which seem so impersonal. The cigar gift boxes then become keepsakes to keep treasures, jewelry, business receipts, etc.
Step One: Sand the cigar box. Empty cigar boxes are for sale for $2-3 at cigar shops. The all wood ones are best.
Tape all the hardware with blue tape.
Step Two: Fully sand down as much of the burned in logos and print. What you don't sand down will show up later. Leave the inside and bottom in tact, just sand the outside. Use Blue Masking tape to tape all the hardware, use an Exacto knife to cut around the corners.
Step Three: Paint 2 coats of white or black primer. Then Paint 2-3 coats with a High Gloss Paint, choose your color, I did several in gold, black and white.
Step Four: Once you have finished all painting, remove the blue masking tape. For a special touch, we added gold leaving on some of the boxes. Once they were fully dry, we used Blue Masking Tape to cover the sections we did not want to gold leaf.
Step Five: For a wedding gift certificate, we took an amethyst quartz rock and sanded the bottom as flat as possible. Then added 1/2 inch of gold leaf to the bottom. We then hot glued on a piece of card stock paper to the bottom of the quartz. And again, hot glued the paper at the bottom of the quartz to the top of the cigar box. It looked really elegant.
Step Six: For my adult sons, we cut out the last name initial in heavy cardboard and gold leafed it. Then hot glued it onto the top of the box.
