I found some adorable hanging terrariums at Walmart and I am creating a plant wall in my kitchen and they are the perfect addition. Follow along as I create my hanging terrarium.

I placed the brackets on s couple of nails that were already there.

I started with this recipe.

1st layer: Fine Gravel or Rocks

2nd layer: Charcoal

3rd layer: Sphagnum Moss

4th layer: Cactus Soil (Lightenly Pre-moistened)

Here it is just hanging on a mail.

Take the two anchors and throw them away. They are actual garbage and do yourself a favor and use good wall anchors.

I used a drill to put the brackets up and wall anchors in the wall.

The left side is how I installed it… upside down! I had to redo it. The right side is correct.

Now that the bracket is up, time to start learning how to make a terrarium and fill it.

I bought a small container of river rocks from Lowes.

They were very pretty. I don’t feel like this picture does them justice.

It’s a little awkward to get them in but doable.

One layer down, three to go!

Next up activated charcoal. It should act as a filter that pulls toxins and bacteria from the soil and keep the terrarium healthy. I found this at a pet store.

I was not expecting it to look like this.

So hard to cover the pretty rocks.

Charcoal layer done, now it is time for the Sphagnum Moss.

When I went to get the Sphagnum Moss, they were out but I saw Spanish Moss so I googled if they were the same and they are not. To my surprise, Spanish Moss is not even moss. Sphagnum Moss will eventually break down and decompose into soil.

Sphagnum Moss layer is complete and now it is time for the succulent or cactus soil.

I added a small amount of water and stirred it up or you could put it in and mist it lightly.

I used succulent soil that I made. Here is the tutorial.

I used a spoon to cover the Sphagnum Moss.

Fourth layer is complete and now the fun stuff.

I added some more rocks and these tiny houses.

I want the succulents to look like trees and bushes.

You could even get more creative if you like.

My soil layer looks kind of skimpy from this view. I’ll add more soil if needed.

I love the touch of whimsy the little houses add.

What do you think? Would you like to make a terrarium? I think it would be a great activity to do with kids.

I really like it and it is certainly different.

Have you ever made a terrarium and do you have any tips for me?

Do you know that top fin is activated charcoal and cleans the air also . I hang bags of it in my basement and also in all my closets . I just used the mesh bags from the dollar tree and cut and sewed them into smaller bags and sewed ties int them to hang them . I buy that stuff for my koi pond in bulk and read about activated charcoal air cleaners and relized it was the same thing I was buying already for my pond . Great in bathrooms also
