How To Make A Candle Ornament From A Dowel

Making Christmas ornaments is one of my favorite things to do. Every year I make at least one if not more. This idea is a small version of the Candle from Landscape Edging I did a couple of years ago. I created this ornament for the 12 Days of Christmas blog hop I just participated in. So let’s get this party started and learn how to make a candle ornament from a dowel.
The dowel I happen to have is ¾” diameter and I sawed off a piece about 2”. Drill a hole on the top and a small one on the side of the dowel for the screw eye so you can hang it. Go ahead and put a toothpick in the small hole so the paint doesn't clog up the small hole you just drilled. I mixed up a little bit of the DIY chalk paint. It is one part Plaster of Paris mixed with water. Then add 3 parts of the paint. Paint the dowel or shall we call it the candle? Paint the wood round red, that is the candle base.
Once the candle is dry it is time to add the candle wax. Add more Plaster of Paris to the DIY chalk paint so it is thick. Glop it on the candle to mimic dripping wax. Let it dry. Then wax the candle.
After the wood round is dry, paint both sides with the red glitter paint. When the paint is dry, brush one side with Mod Podge. Then sprinkle on red glitter.
Clip a piece of the gold cord and glue in the drilled hole on the top. Trim if needed. Once everything is thoroughly dry, hot glue the candle to the base. Screw in the screw eye. That is where the ornament hanger will hang from. Glue the little piece of greenery to the base and add the red berries. I had the greenery left over from my red car ornament.
Hang it on the Christmas tree and enjoy.
