Mini Embroidery Hoop Christmas Ornaments

Last year I had fun making ribbon tree ornaments and decided I wanted to make more DIY ornaments this year. I looked through my boards on Pinterest and discovered mini sized embroidery hoops. Right away I pictured how they could be turned into Christmas ornaments and set out to get my supplies.

Here is what you'll need:

  • 3″ mini embroidery hoops
  • stain
  • old rags
  • black cord or string
  • ribbon
  • greenery
  • cardstock
  • glue gun
  • markers, stamps or font stickers for lettering

I wanted a warmer color for the mini embroidery hoop so I took a rag and applied the gel stain, in the color “Coffee”, then immediately wiped it off.

While it dried, I cut 2-1/2″ black circles and 2″ white circles out of my cardstock. I was able to use my Circuit to print and cut but you can also find something circular, like a lid, to trace around.

For the lettering you have a couple options. You can print from your printer, then trace and cut around the circle. Or cut the paper first and write, stamp or use font stickers to create words.

I made a hole using a tack at the top of the tag then used my pointed scissors to make the hole big enough for the cord to fit through. I cut 12″ of cord and folded it in half so I had the two open ends to feed through the hole at the same time. Then I came back and fed the same ends through the loop as seen above and tightened it.

I tied the cord around the hardware of the mini embroidery hoop, allowing the tag to still hang loosely. I wanted a small space between the tag and the hoop.

Next I cut small pieces of Christmas greenery and used my hot glue gun to make small clumps of greens to glue to the mini embroidery hoops.

I hid my hardware with either Christmas greenery or a bow and even added greenery to the bottom of one of them. Just play with it and have fun!

They are now ready for hanging. The possibilities for these are endless. You could paint the embroidery hoop, leave it natural, change out the ribbon or change the color of the cardstock. Check out my embroidery hoop Christmas wreath too.
