I am so thrilled that my (older!) sister is finally going to be a grandma! I've been grandma for 12 years! I have 3 beautiful grandchildren and being a grandmother is the best! If I'd known how great it is, I'd have skipped right over the kids and gone straight to grands!
Babies and kids really get my creativity going. Maybe because I'm just a big kid at heart and I think ' oh yes! I would have loved that! And I can make it!'
Anyhow... I decided to make a diaper cake for my soon to be great niece.
I used newborn diapers. You can use any size and/or a combination. The size of diaper you use depends on the size of the cake you want. I had to ship mine, so I didnt want it too big. For 3 layers (like I did) you'll need close to 100 diapers (any size)
Starting with the open end, roll them up, and secure with a small rubber band around the middle. Do this to each diaper.

The next step is to secure a tube to your surface. You can use a cake stand or a cardboard round. I cut tabs on a cardboard tube and hot glued it to a metal cake stand. I ended up moving it off of the stand and glued it to a cake round.

Start placing diapers around the tube, securing them with a rubber band in the middle. You'll want to use a heavier rubber band for this. This is the bottom layer. Continue adding diapers until the bottom layer is the size you want. Basically, you want to cover the bottom of whatever your support is (stand, cardboard round)

First layer
Then start on the next layer! You can make one large layer, or 2 or 3. It's up to you, of course!
Second layer
When you have the layers you want, then it's time for fun! Seriously, rolling 100+ diapers isn't a lot of fun, but the decorating is!!
While decorating the cake, it may be necessary to remove a layer from time to time. Just take your time and the shape should keep.
I needed to do just that in order to cover the diaper rounds with lace.
For the lace frosting, I sewed the ends of fabric together, leaving the top and bottom open. I made one for each layer. Carefully remove the layers and slide the lace tube over the layer you are working on. Tuck it under and tuck the top edges into the hole where the tube is. Replace the next layer , do the same. Repeat for each layer.
Tuck the edges in around the tube
Next, I measured 3 pieces of fabric around the diameter of each layer, and the width I wanted each strip to be (about 3 inches) and pressed each one. After pressing, secure it tightly around each layer. I chose this very cool sheet music fabric, because my nephew ( dad to be) is a musician.
I used hot glue but just a dab because you don't want glue on the diapers! These CAN and should be used!

After the music fabric frosting, I added a black ribbon around each layer, again, using just a dab of hot glue.
I felt it needed a little more decoration, so I made some white paper flowers and glued them on the sides.
Mama to be loves penguins (who doesn't??!) and they are having a girl, so this little cutie that I found on eBay was perfect! I stuffed her little feet into the top of the tube on the top layer.
And that's it! Before I shipped it, I wrapped it in clear cellophane, but forgot to take a picture. As a gift, it looks better. I got it at Dollar Tree, but I'm not sure if they carry it year round. I bought it before Easter, and as basket wrap, they had plenty. But I don't know if it's a seasonal product or not.
