Hello Shirleysews, I went to a baby shower a couple years ago where they asked everyone to bring a children's book. The expecting mother was surprised of how many books were given. I believe reading to your kids is one of the most single best ways to spend time with your little ones.
On the invitation add that a book for the child be purchased and placed at the table they would be seated at. Then decorate with learning toys for baby. They are pretty inexpensive compared to floral arrangements. Cut felt placemats in the shape of an open book. And play children songs during the brunch time hour that will bring back memories. Have photos of the parents as babies and toddlers to decorate tables aso well. Pass around a keepsake book for invited and ask them to write a piece of advice they wish that they had be given with their first child. I tend to go for the not expected. Everyone decorates with plush animals or plain floral arrangements, books signed to baby with persons name have more meaning and learning toys shows that they value education so it all ties in. Have fun with what ever you go with but everyone hates those baby games.
empty glass bottles, buy arts and crafts paint and shiplap and ribbons, flowers, etc and paint the bottles favorite colors and put décor on them, and flowers in them and you could glue or paint letters on the bottles to make a word, and then every one who participates gives the bottles to the new mommy and they can be put in the babies room, or bathroom or kitchen of the new mommy. It is so much fun... Have fun and enjoy!
My daughter turned one into a painting party, where everyone got to create a canvas that was their party favor. There were smocks and aprons and guests were encouraged to wear casual clothing. We also did a book theme at one, as previously mentioned. We gave her a bookcase to keep them. My granddaughter has had those books read to her since she was born. At 6 she loves to read!
If you want to have fun and lots of laughing. Take new born diaper about 8 or 10 then take some kind of chocolate candy bar and smash it in the diaper. Then the game is people have to write down what kind of candy bar it is. Who ever guess's the most wins a little gift. It is so funny watching everybody smelling the diaper trying to figure out what kind. They forget about the diaper.
My daughter was really interested in puzzles and books. She was very careful with all her toys and books, as she out grown them I put in a big plastic box and put them away. When she had her first baby, she got some of her old books to read to the baby... I was surprised that my granddaughter was enjoying them the same as her mommy. I realized some of them had the name of the person who gave it to my daughter. I took a picture and sent to my friend with a written note: Your gift to my child when she was born is now a gift to her baby, my granddaughter. Once more, thank you.
baby bottles for center pieces, playpen for holding gifts, baby tub for keeping beverages cold, nuks or toys for balloon weights ..just think of things a mom can use for kids and not just infants...remember...they don't stay little forever...have guests sign in using helpful hints they've learned through the years...I've also used laundry baskets or plastic bins to "wrap" my presents in cuz you can never have too many of those!
