Decide on a theme....maybe he likes baseball? Baseball cake...white with red licorice for the lacing....football, medium orangey icing and black licorice lacing or white rolled taffy lacing. You can even texture the football with an actual orange.
One design that ALWAYS worked for my kids was the bright yellow iced cake with Dots candy for the eyes and smile!
